Split amounts are allocated in whole cents. When the total cannot divide evenly, one or more shares may differ by one cent so the split always adds back to the exact bill total.

How to calculate a massage tip

Enter the massage service price and choose a percentage or custom rate. The calculator shows the voluntary tip and final amount immediately.

The Emily Post Institute currently lists 15% to 20% for massage, facial, and waxing services in its general U.S. tipping guide. That makes 15%, 18%, and 20% useful reference points, but the amount you leave is still your choice unless a required charge is clearly disclosed.

Check whether a service charge is already included

Some spas or resorts add a service charge automatically. A required charge is different from a voluntary tip, so review the receipt before adding another percentage. If the receipt wording is unclear, ask the business how the charge is handled.

For a broader explanation, see Service Charge vs. Tip.

What amount should be used as the tip base?

The simplest approach is to use the massage service price. If your receipt includes retail products, taxes, or unrelated fees, you may prefer to exclude those from the amount on which you calculate the voluntary tip.

For packages, memberships, discounts, or gift certificates, you can choose either the amount actually paid or the regular service value. The calculator does not assume one method is universally correct.

How the context fields work

Session duration and venue type help me distinguish a short spa visit from a longer or independent-provider appointment. They add context only; the calculator does not silently change my percentage.
