Calculate a voluntary tip for an Uber, Lyft, taxi, or other ride from the fare and your chosen percentage.

These fields do not apply a hidden tip multiplier. They make the service effort explicit while the percentage remains your choice.

Split amounts are allocated in whole cents. When the total cannot divide evenly, one or more shares may differ by one cent so the split always adds back to the exact bill total.

How to calculate a rideshare tip

Enter the ride fare and choose a percentage or custom rate. The calculator shows the voluntary tip and final amount immediately.

Tipping on rideshare trips is not mandatory. NerdWallet's current Uber guide notes that riders can choose app presets, a custom amount, or no tip. For a traditional taxi reference, the Emily Post Institute lists 15% to 20% of the fare.

Because rideshare platforms and local practices vary, this page treats the percentage as a comparison tool rather than a requirement.

Percentage or flat-dollar amount?

Apps often present flat-dollar buttons for smaller fares and percentage choices for larger ones. Either approach can be reasonable because the tip is voluntary. The calculator is useful when you want to understand the percentage equivalent before choosing an in-app option.

Service factors

Help with luggage, an unusually clean vehicle, a difficult pickup location, extra waiting, or a particularly helpful ride may influence what you choose. Poor service may lead you to choose a smaller amount or none. These factors are personal judgments, not automatic adjustments made by the calculator.

Taxi versus rideshare

Taxi etiquette and app-based rideshare behavior overlap but are not identical. If you are using a taxi, the percentage reference above is directly aligned with the Emily Post travel guide. For Uber or Lyft, use the result as a transparent math reference and follow the app's payment flow.

How the context fields work

Airport travel, luggage help, and a long trip are tracked as trip context. They do not automatically raise the tip; I can compare the same fare with the amount I choose.
