Split amounts are allocated in whole cents. When the total cannot divide evenly, one or more shares may differ by one cent so the split always adds back to the exact bill total.

How to calculate a 15% tip

A 15% tip equals the amount you choose as the tip base multiplied by 0.15. For a $40 bill, 15% is $6. For an $80 bill, it is $12. The calculator above does the same math instantly and can also include tax, service charges, and bill splitting when those fields matter.

For U.S. sit-down restaurant service, the Emily Post Institute currently lists 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill as a general guideline. That makes 15% a useful comparison point, but it is not a universal requirement for every service or situation.

Quick 15% tip examples

Bill15% tipTotal before tax or fees
$20$3.00$23.00
$40$6.00$46.00
$60$9.00$69.00
$80$12.00$92.00
$100$15.00$115.00

A fast mental shortcut is to find 10% of the bill and then add half of that amount. On an $80 bill, 10% is $8 and 5% is $4, so 15% is $12.

Should 15% be calculated before or after tax?

If you are using the U.S. restaurant guideline above, the published reference is based on the pre-tax bill. Some people prefer to tip on the after-tax total instead. The difference is usually modest, but the Tip Calculator With Tax can show both amounts side by side.

Splitting a 15% tip

When several people are paying together, calculate the full bill first and then split the final amount. The calculator keeps every cent accounted for when the total does not divide evenly. For a more detailed group check, use the Split Bill Calculator or the Uneven Split Bill Calculator.
