I choose the calculation method first
I use the movers calculator in one of three modes: Percentage, Flat per mover, or Hourly per mover. I pick the method before entering the numbers so the crew size and hours affect the result only when they are supposed to.
Percentage mode scales with the moving bill. Flat-per-mover mode uses crew size only. Hourly mode uses the full formula crew size × move hours × amount per mover per hour.
Hourly example
If four movers work for six hours and I choose $5 per mover per hour, the calculator returns:
4 movers × 6 hours × $5 = $120 total
If I switch to a flat $25 per mover instead, the same four-person crew produces $100 total. The separate modes make that difference visible instead of asking me to infer it from an unused hours field.
Percentage example
On a $1,000 move, 10% is $100 and 15% is $150. Percentage-based tipping can produce a very different result from a flat or hourly method on an expensive or long-distance move, so I compare methods rather than treating one formula as mandatory.
I also consider stairs, long carries, heavy items, packing, multiple stops, weather, and whether the loading and unloading crews are different. Those are decision factors, not hidden multipliers in the calculator.

When flat or hourly amounts are easier to reason about
A flat-per-mover amount is useful when I already have a specific crew amount in mind and do not want the tip to scale with the moving invoice. If five movers are on the job and I enter $30 per mover, the result is $150 regardless of whether the move itself cost $900 or $1,800.
Hourly mode is different because time becomes part of the formula. With three movers working eight hours at $4 per mover per hour, the calculator shows $96. I use this mode only when I intentionally want the amount to reflect both crew size and time; the hours field never changes the percentage or flat modes.
Split crews and changing crew size
Some moves use different crews for loading and unloading. In that situation I calculate each crew separately instead of entering one combined crew size that includes people who did not perform the same work. The same approach helps when the crew changes during a multi-day move.
Before choosing a method, I compare the resulting dollar totals and consider the actual work involved. Stairs, heavy items, difficult access, long carries, packing, weather, and careful handling can all matter to my decision, but the calculator keeps those judgments visible rather than applying a hidden multiplier.
