Split amounts are allocated in whole cents. When the total cannot divide evenly, one or more shares may differ by one cent so the split always adds back to the exact bill total.

How to calculate a 25% tip

Multiply the amount you want to tip on by 0.25. Because 25% is one quarter, you can also divide the bill by four. A $40 bill produces a $10 tip, an $80 bill produces a $20 tip, and a $120 bill produces a $30 tip.

The calculator above is useful when the amount is not a clean multiple of four or when tax, service charges, or bill splitting also need to be included.

The Emily Post Institute currently lists 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill as a general U.S. guideline for sit-down wait service. A 25% amount is above that reference range, so this page should be treated as a calculator for a percentage you choose, not as a recommendation that 25% is required.

When a 25% comparison is useful

A higher percentage may be something you want to compare after unusually attentive service, a complicated order, or simply because you have chosen to leave more. The calculator does not judge the service or choose the amount for you; it only makes the math transparent.

Tax and service charges

If the receipt shows tax separately, you can decide whether the percentage should apply to the pre-tax subtotal or the after-tax total. The Tip Calculator With Tax compares both. If the receipt already includes a required service charge or automatic gratuity, review that line before adding an extra voluntary amount.

Split the total accurately

For groups, calculate the full check first and then divide the final amount. The Split Bill Calculator handles remainder cents exactly, while the Uneven Split Bill Calculator is better when people ordered different amounts.
